Overview

The Hogsworth Express conductor has been around for many centuries. Their primary job is to check the tickets of passengers who board the Hogsworth Express. Those who become a Hogsworth Express conductor find that they have this job for many years. There is only ever one conductor at a time.

When not checking tickets, the Hogsworth Express conductor is expected to help keep the train and the tracks in tip-top shape. Conductors are able to fix small issues with the tracks and check for obstructions. However, bigger jobs require engineers to come down. It is unknown whether the conductor’s job is entirely necessary due to magic evolving drastically to the point where it can determine who is allowed on the train. Despite this, the job still sticks around, and the conductors can be seen patrolling the train all year round.

Application Process & Requirements

While many assume that this job requires very few qualifications to get in, it is actually the opposite. Those who want to apply for the position are expected to have at least an Exceeds Expectations in both Transfiguration and Charms. This is to ensure that the conductor can fix any issues with the train, along with helping repair the tracks. Additionally, these skills may be used for checking tickets.

The application for the conductor position is pretty simple. Many of the questions involve general interest in the position rather than a test of skill. These questions are used as a personality test to ensure that the conductor will be a good fit for being around people and will do the job well.

Those who pass the initial application stage will be moved on to a more practical portion of the job. The potential conductor will be given a variety of Hogsworth Express tickets and will be expected to try to point out the fakes in the group. It is believed that those meant to be the conductor will have a natural talent for pointing out fake tickets. Depending on the number of applicants, only around 3–5 wizards will make it past this stage.

The final part of the application process is an interview. While this normally comes in the early stages, the application for the conductor likes to test based on skill without having any biases as to what the applicant is like in person.

Job Requirements

For the most part, the Hogsworth Express conductor has a fairly easy time year-round. Very few students take the Hogsworth Express during the year. During these times, the conductor will be expected to ensure that there are no issues with the train and that the rails are not damaged. This allows for an easier experience during the busier times of the year.

At the end of June and the beginning of September, there are a lot more jobs to do for the conductor. In September, the conductor must ensure that everyone getting on the train has a valid ticket that has not been forged with magic. The conductor should have a natural eye for this, but if not, Revelius can be used. Additionally, the conductor must make final calls for boarding the train and not allow anyone to board after 11 a.m. sharp.

In June, the conductor is tasked with making sure all Hogsworth students make it to Kings Cross at the correct time. Similarly to September, the conductor checks tickets and makes sure the train leaves at the correct time. It cannot be a minute late, as this would mess up the journey.

There is no uniform for the position of Hogsworth Express conductor. However, all employees are expected to dress smartly and be ready for work.

Notable Figures

Edward Clifford (1815 - 1920)

Edward Clifford was the first ever Hogsworth Express conductor. He was hired not long after the train was acquired, and he was only 20 when he started the job in 1835. He continued to keep the job until his death in 1920. Edward was a big reason why the career stayed around.

Keres Jagger (1935 - 1965)

Keres Jagger is one of the only known corrupt Hogsworth Express conductors to this day. Due to his laziness, Keres did not take proper care of the tracks. As a result, during the school trip one September, the train flew off the rails and ended up severely injuring passengers on board, including Keres. Every year, parents place flowers in memory of what happened on the train. This incident is what sparked a more intense application process, as well as ensuring that all conductors received proper training.

Olive Travers (1980 - Present)

Olive Travers is the current Hogsworth Express conductor. He has only had the job for a short period of time. However, it is believed he will hold the job until at least 2080. There are no outstanding stories about his time as conductor so far.

Impact on Gameplay

The Hogsworth Express Conductor is encountered in the year three quest, London Bound, where players must assist the conductor in ensuring that his train visits London. Players can also speak to the conductor at King’s Cross and Hogsend station to travel to the other location.
