Overview
Fire Lung is a non-contagious, somewhat severe, and sometimes deadly disease in the magical world brought on by excessive use of Fire Dust travel. With the creation of Fire Dust in 1898, the first cases of Fire Lung Disease began to spread across the world. Depending on its severity and who contracts it, this horrendous disease can either be a short-lived mild inconvenience or a death sentence.
Cause & Symptoms
As previously mentioned, Fire Lung is caused by the improper use of Fire Dust. Though the usage of Fire Dust is a daily occurrence for magical folk across the world, as with most things in life, there can be a danger to it. As a method of transportation, Fire Dust is harmless. However, should Fire Dust be excessively inhaled during travel, it can lead to the beginning stages of Fire Lung Disease.
The symptoms and side effects of Fire Lung Disease depend entirely on the severity of the case. Everyone’s immune system reacts differently to disease and some may be hit harder than others.
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Burning sensation in chest (mild to severe)
- Blisters in the mouth and airways
- Ulcers
- Coughing blood
- Lung failure (late stage)
Even when treated, some cases may have progressed far enough to leave a lasting impact on the patient’s health, such as breathing problems or complete loss of their voice. In advanced stages of the disease, death is often a result of the aforementioned complications.
Treatments
Though it has been over two centuries since the first case of Fire Lung Disease, treatments and cures are still very few. There are still many studies and experiments underway to find more effective methods to treat, and hopefully cure this disease. Currently, those with mild cases are the most likely to recover and return to normal after contracting this disease. Depending on how quickly they are given treatment after the first symptoms appear, they will have no lasting health issues.
- Rest (as with many illnesses, it will fade in time)
- Containment Concoction and/or Restoration Draught
- Cold water (to soothe any burning sensations)
- Breathing treatments (an Unmagical invention, though quite helpful)
Unfortunately, those who are unlucky enough to have severe or late-stage cases of the disease have limited options in terms of treatment. Rest, cold water, concoctions and draughts can only do so much. If all previous treatment options have failed, depending on the severity, some patients may live with lasting health issues and others may wither away. Some live to ripe old ages, though they may hack up a lung now and again.
