Overview

A chest is a hidden chest if it emits blue particles and it is clickable. Currently, there are over 500 hidden chests scattered throughout the world. They can be found by certain builds and structures and may need some manoeuvring to get to, either via parkour or by casting specific spells. Some towns may not have any hidden chests. These include Appleby Village, The Dark Prison, Greenshore Harbour, Rushstone, and Walden.

Every 30 minutes, a hidden chest can be interacted with and its contents are able to be looted. This is indicated by blue particles emitting from the chest and there is no cooldown hologram above it. After finding a certain amount of hidden chests, players over Level 20 can claim daily activities in the Miscellaneous section. This can be found by doing /me, or more specifically /daily, in-game. Hidden chests are level locked, meaning that a player needs to be at a specific level to open a certain hidden chest.

Content

Upon interacting with a hidden chest, a player will be rewarded with Gold, mob drops, broom recipes, and gear recipes. However, these rewards vary depending on what level the hidden chest is. This level is dependent on where it is located and the spells needed to get to it.

For example, a hidden chest that requires no spells to get to in Hogsworth, which is a Level 1 town, would hold mob drops and gear recipe(s) from Year 1. In contrast, a hidden chest that requires the spell Reductamus, which is acquired at Level 49, at Hogsworth would hold mob drops and gear recipe(s) from Year 5 since Reductamus is a Year 5 spell. The higher the level, the more Gold that is rewarded as well.

Since brooms are introduced at the end of the Year 3 quest, “Broomsmith Break-In”, broom recipes will only appear in hidden chests over Level 30. The higher level the hidden chest is, the more likely it is to get a higher tier broom recipe.

Tiers

Along with having different levels, hidden chests also have different tiers. There are three tiers, numbered one through three, and the tier number is determined by how the hidden chest is concealed. The more complex it is to get to the hidden chest, the higher the tier number. Each tier number determines the frequency of certain rewards appearing. Generally, the higher the tier number, the more likely it is for a player to receive more Gold, broom recipes, and gear recipes.

History

Before the Revelius update in July 2020, hidden chests emitted green particles and were only a single-click interaction. Every four hours, it could be interacted with, rewarding “Random Valuable Ingredients”, “One Random Chocolate Card”, and 15 Gold if the player had at least six free inventory slots. These ingredients were used in the old Professions system, and the chocolate card is known today as a “Choco Hop Card”. Occasionally, a Chocolate Frog would hop out of the hidden chest. Players could then try to earn a Chocolate Frog food item by damaging it with spells before it disappeared.

With the Revelius update, the concept of three tiers, each varying in loot quality, was added. The cooldown was reduced from four hours to 30 minutes. The ability to receive Gold from these chests was removed, along with the ability to get Choco Hop cards.

In a December 2020 Gameplay Patches and Improvements update, Gold was added back to hidden chests. Players could now earn a random amount of Gold within a range of 1 to 25. In May 2021’s Gameplay Update 1.3.0, the maximum was lowered to 19 from 25 in order to accommodate gold rebalancing from quests. In July 2022, The Reputation Expansion update placed a level lock on hidden chests.

Fire Dust was removed as a currency required to travel via the Fire Dust Network, and therefore was removed from hidden chests in May 2023 as part of the Gameplay Update 1.9.1.
