Overview

First recorded in 1489, the Singing Chord virus was an outbreak that spread through Squalus Cove. The disease ran rampant within the wizarding town until 1503. However, a cure was never created for the Singing Chord virus. Instead, Squalus Cove’s leaders exiled the infected individuals and put in place a mandatory sanitation and lockdown of the town.

History

In the late 15th century, disease was as common – if not more – than the average person’s supper. Outbreaks of dysentery, typhoid, and smallpox affected just about every family in Unmagical villages across the British Isles and mainland Europe. Miraculously, the majority of small towns with somewhat of a wizarding population managed to keep these ailments mostly at bay. That isn’t to say that they did not experience their own… strange maladies.

The Singing Chord virus was one of the magical world’s more peculiar illnesses. First brought into Squalus Cove by a wizard working as a cook on an unknown pirate ship, the unordinary symptoms – uncontrollable singing, constant perspiration, and a slight tremor in the hand – caused it to be overlooked as most people who encountered the wizard just assumed he was a very happy guy who liked to sing rather than speak normally. However, by 1497, citizens of Squalus Cove began to realize that turning every spoken sentence into a musical number was not something that an average person chose to do. With the help of various spells and tests, magical doctors in Squalus Cove identified it as a virus that had never been recorded prior to this sudden outbreak. Creatively naming it the Singing Chord virus, they promptly reported their findings and plans to research a cure to the town’s government.

Unfortunately, their request to develop a cure was swiftly dismissed as it was believed that the research would take too long. Instead, Squalus Cove’s leaders thought of a new, more swift plan to cleanse the town of the Singing Chord virus. Their solution was to quarantine and exile all those who had been infected. While this process wasn’t that much faster than researching a cure would’ve been, Squalus Cove’s leaders still believe they made the right choice as they managed to completely rid the town of the disease by 1503.

Modern Day

While there have been no notable outbreaks of the Singing Chord virus since 1503, virologists in the wizarding world will still occasionally report the odd infection throughout Europe. However, due to the disease being so uncommon, there is still no cure for it.
