Overview

Magical Infirmitas is a leech-like disease that eats away at a wizard’s magical core. The disease disrupts the flow of magic within a person, causing a depletion of magic and weakened magical defences. Fortunately, the parasite is slow-spreading and won't completely destroy the wizard's magic.

History

First discovered in 1506, Magical Infirmitas caused uproar in the wizarding community. Many people refused to leave their homes in fear of catching something seen as worse than death. Months of research were put into finding out who had caused the disease to surface, as well as how it happened.

It wasn’t long before they identified the culprit as Roman Dankworth. Deemed to be too powerful, they detained him in hopes of stopping any future outbreaks. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Many large outbreaks of the disease continued until 1556. At this point, they had researched the disease extensively and eventually figured out a way to cure those with Magical Infirmitas. To do this, they used an ancient ritual that was believed to cleanse a person of anything negative.

Cause & Symptoms

Despite being uncommon, Magical Infirmitas easily spreads. The leech-like disease is known to travel through the air via areas of high magical potential. Luckily, wizards don’t tend to produce anything powerful enough to cause the transfer of the disease. However, when it happens, Magical Infirmitas will enter the body through any opening and make its way to a wizard’s core. Upon reaching the core, it will latch onto it and begin the draining process. To have any lasting damage, the disease would have to be there for months. Most wizards will realise its presence soon after the disease has taken effect, except those with large amounts of hubris.

For the most part, wizards will only notice they have this disease through the slow depletion of their magical core. It is easily discoverable as even the most basic of spells will become increasingly difficult to cast due to the decrease in power. However, many of the other symptoms are associated with common colds. For example, many wizards experience a high fever and tiredness that comes with their bodies adjusting to a smaller magical core.

Cure

To perform the ritual, one must be in the correct state of mind. In order to achieve this, medication is required to find the centre, roughly where the core is located.

However, before doing this, the wizard must draw a series of runes on the ground to represent the cleansing of the wizard’s magical core. These are carved into the dirt and are not removed throughout the process. After doing this, the wizard proceeds to relax at the centre of the runes, ready for the ritual to take place. The witness, normally a medical professional, will activate the runes.

The magic of the runes will seep into the wizard affected and completely remove the Magical Infirmitas from them. Due to the energy needed, the wizard normally passes out afterwards.

Modern Day

Fortunately, Magical Infirmitas is not as common as it was in the 1500s. The disease has been weakened over time and needs a lot more magical energy to form. Some people still manage to contract it, but it is easily cured with the ritual.
