Wands and Casting Magic

Wands are the main source of casting spells on the Potterworld server. Every player receives their own wand when joining the server for the first time. Spells can be obtained or purchased through the store, different events, and levelling up. The wand helps you keep track of every spell earned and is the focal point to when you cast one of your spells.

Wand Basics

A spell is always equipped to the wand and therefore is able to be cast by just left-clicking while holding the wand. There are numerous spells that a can be obtained and chosen from. To view the different spells available, you simply have to right-click the wand while it is in your hand to open the wand menu; to close the menu and return to your regular inventory, right-click again.

Wand Lore

Each wand has a unique wood and core that it is created from. You are able to view your own type of wand by hovering over it. When hovering, you are also able to see the spell currently equipped, your current year, the number of known spells, the amount of magic you have, as well as the magic regeneration. To select a wand wood and core, players must hold their wand and use the /wandlore command. Changing it once more requires a Wand Lore Token. The below tables detail the available wand lore woods and cores, some of which are seasonal, as of February 2025.

Selecting & Casting Spells

Casting a spell is very simple and only requires you to left-click with the wand in the direction you want the spell to go. Some spells will be cast on yourself while others could be cast on or against different players.

When you open the wand menu by right-clicking, you will see a list of different spells in your hotbar. Any of these spells can be equipped by using the number keys or scrolling with a mouse (this works exactly the same as how you would change to a different item or tool in your hotbar when playing Minecraft). However, when you select the spell you want to use, it will quickly highlight the option and then return to the wand. The spell you chose will now be the one equipped and ready to be cast.

If you are unsure of what a spell does, you simply have to hover over it while the wand menu is open to view the description. To see a list of the different spells and which levels they are obtained at, you can check out the Spells List page. You can also do /spellslist or /spellList while in-game on Potterworld to see a full list of every spell and their descriptions. Spells abilities can be increased using Talents.

Wand Hotbars

Wand hotbars refer to the spell hotbars that appear when right-clicking a wand. The wand hotbars are extremely useful to have while in combat or for general exploration around the server. This allows you to prepare the spells you most commonly use or feel will be the most helpful during an adventure.

The wand has two different hotbars of spells that you can choose from and easily swap to. To view the secondary hotbar you just have to open the wand hotbar (right-click while holding the wand) and press your drop key, which is the "q" key by default; this will quickly change the hotbar to a new selection of spells to choose from and edit. Another way to switch to the secondary hotbar is by left-clicking on your wand when the wand menu and spell inventory are open.

Spell Inventory

You obtain many spells through your time on the server and when you level up. Each wand hotbar is only able to hold 8 spells at a time (16 in total). To choose and change out the spells, you can right-click your wand and open up your inventory; you will then be able to see and find every other spell learned so far in your spell inventory. When an inventory page completely fills up with spells, a new page will be accessible. To view/change to another page, you can click on either side of your inventory or an empty space in your wand inventory.

You are able to edit your spell hotbars or organise your inventory spell pages depending on the most common spells that you use. To change out spells you can click on the spell you wish to remove from the hotbar and drag it to an open space in your spell inventory. Once you have removed a spell from the hotbar, you can click on another spell that you wish to have easy access to and drag it to the open space in the hotbar. As long as there is an open space available in your hotbars, then you can continue dragging in spells until all spots are filled up.

Wand Modifications

Different modifications and upgrades exist on the server to best fit your casting preferences. These can be accessed and equipped by running the command /wands while holding your wand and clicking on the “Wand Modifications" tab. You will then see a list of different preferences and modifications you are able to choose from. An NPC is also located in Diagonal Lane that allows you to choose from these same options.

Quick Casting is the ability to immediately cast a spell when choosing it in your spell hotbar (either scrolling to it or using the numbers on a keyboard). There are a few different modification options that you can choose for Quick Casting: Default, All Spells, and No Spells. The Default option sets Quick Casting only for certain spells while the All spells option sets it for every spell and No Spells removes Quick Casting alltogether.

Practising Magic

There are multiple ways that you can practise magic and aim with your spells. Duelling Halls are a popular and easily accessible location where you are able to practise shooting spells against another player. You are able to teleport to them using the NPCs labelled "Duelling Halls" located across the world map.

Another place you are able to practise is at housing plots. However, depending on the plot, some spells might be disabled and are not able to be cast. To enable magic on a plot, run the command  /house magic on. You can also type /house damage on and/or /house pvp on to enable damage and PvP with other players.

Each spell has a specific amount of “magic” that it uses when cast. However, you are limited to 100 magic, which regenerates at 20 magic per second. If you run out of magic while casting and it has not regenerated enough by the time another spell is cast, you will be unable to use the spell. Your experience bar (line located above the hotbar) will help you keep track of the amount of magic you have left to use. If the bar runs out or is getting low then you will know you are close to running out of “magic” and should be careful.

Wand Cosmetics

There are many different options that you can purchase or obtain that will change the appearance, name, or particles of a wand. These cosmetics allow for you to make your wand even more unique and customisable.

Wand Appearances

Everyone has the same wand appearance when first receiving their wand, but you can purchase or obtain different appearances that will change the overall look of the wand. These new appearances can be purchased directly from the Potterworld store (located under the tab “Wand Upgrades”) or bought as a reward from different events.

Once you have obtained a wand appearance you can equip it by using the command /wands while holding your wand and clicking on the “Wand Appearance” tab. If you have multiple different appearances then you can choose which one you would like to use after running that command.

*Warning: you will not be able to return to the default wand appearance once you have changed it for the first time.

Wand Effects

When a spell is cast there are oftentimes coloured particles that surround you. However, a different colour of particles can be purchased directly from the Potterworld store (located under the tab “Wand Upgrades”). There are many varieties and options to choose from that will change the particle colour of certain spells as well as surround you if you are holding your wand.

You will also receive coloured wand effects for certain allegiance/club packages. These colours can also be purchased separately without having to buy the whole package. If you are interested in only purchasing the allegiance/club wand effect, you can click the “Allegiance Wand Enhancement” tab under “Allegiances / Clubs”. Buying this option will also let you gain access to allegiance wand names and a new spell.

In order to equip or change the particle colour you can use the command /wands while holding your wand and clicking on the “Wand Effects” tab.

Wand Names

You can also choose to rename your wand to make it more unique to yourself. To purchase a Wand Rename you can go to the Potterworld store and select the “Other” option under “Wand Upgrades”. After you purchase the Wand Rename, wait for the confirmation that it went through in-game then use the command /wandrename. Using the wand rename system you can put a new name through.

When thinking of a name for your wand, make sure to come up with an appropriate name. Wand names can include symbols and colours. If you do not like the name anymore or want to change it you will have to purchase a new Wand Rename (even if just removing/adding a couple of letters). Similar to above, specific wand names also come with certain allegiance/club packages. The names can be purchased separately without having to buy the whole package. If you are interested in only purchasing the allegiance/club wand name, you can click the “Allegiance Wand Enhancement” tab under “Allegiances / Clubs”. Buying this option will also let you gain access to the wand effect and a new spell.

To change the wand name to an allegiance name option you can use the command /wands while holding your wand and choosing the name under the “Wand Names” tab.

Tips

  • If you find that your wand has disappeared and you cannot find it in your inventory try switching worlds. If that does not work then create a ticket (/t create) and let a staff member know your wand has disappeared.
  • It is extremely helpful to organise your spell inventory by type or most used as you may have to quickly switch up spells for certain quests or different activities.
