Overview
The Pride at Portovenere Event of 2023 was held from 3rd June to 1st July, celebrating Pride Month. This event took players to a new coastal town, Portovenere. Here, players assisted the residents in hosting the town’s biggest pride event yet! Unique to pride events, players utilised the Pride Tokens currency, earning it through minigames, quests, and activities, to buy extraordinary collectables.
Storyline
The majority of the content in this event was based around three domains: cooking, crafting, and herbology. These three techniques were used to create items for the town’s Pride festival.
Location
This event was held at Portovenere, a coastal town. The town featured a bustling harbour with plenty of pride-themed boats, as well as beautifully coloured townhouses on the cliffside of a hill.
The location was based on the towns that make up Cinque Terre in Italy, particularly Monterosso and Vernazza.
Quests
The 2023 Pride event hosted two main quests. One, Pride at Portovenere, was an introductory quest to teach players the layout of the town and the key places to visit. The second was an introduction to how the systems of the event worked. Both quests rewarded Pride Tokens, and finishing both unlocked most of the activities for players.
Pride at Portovenere
In this quest, players were introduced to Mayor Guila, mayor of Portovenere. She explained that Portovenere was dealing with an influx of attendees to that year's pride festival, and the town was not used to the level of demand. They had gathered experts at hosting pride festivals from Iris Cove and Diagonal Lane, London (past locations of Potterworld pride events) but still required more hands.
Players helped Mayor Guila and her secretary, Jacopo Abate, create flyers to advertise the Pride festival and post them all around town. While players only needed to post five around town, this section of the quest was unique in that there were over ten places where the flyers could be placed.
Notably at Mimi, the town’s flower shop, players could gather flowers and utilise the flowers they had gathered to decorate a flower arch. There was an abundance of colours to decorate the flower arch with, and this flower arrangement remained unique to players for the duration of the event.
Players assisted shops around Portovenere, then returned to help Jacopo Abate again with music for the festival, before completing the quest and gaining Pride Tokens.
Systems Introduction
After completing the introductory quest, Pride at Portovenere, players could return to the three Portovenere shops they had helped at to learn more about the ongoings of the shop itself. These three shops were the restaurant Osteria d'Orgoglio, the flower shop Mimi, and the art shop La Mostra di Sogni.
At the restaurant, the Chef of Osteria d’Orgoglio, Ines Farina, explained how she cooked food for the pride festival. She introduced players to the pantries where they could gather ingredients, and to the Stove Top, Oven, Fridge, Dairy, Mixer, Chopping Board, and the Counter Top where they could create their masterpieces.
At the flower shop, Caterina Benetti explained the tiers of plants that she grew at her shop and how they take different lengths of time to grow, making some plants more special than others.
At the art shop of Portovenere, the owner, Emanuele Macini, explained how he created items in three different ways. He taught players how to craft items using a crafting table, how to enchant items using runes, and how to assemble items following a particular set of steps.
Once players had successfully learned how to follow all three systems around town, they returned to Jacopo Abate who explained how players could continue to assist each shop and earn Pride Tokens for doing so throughout the duration of the pride festival.
Side Quests
There were no side quests in this event, as the focus was on activities.
Activities
There were two repeatable activities in the Pride Event, and one continual activity. The repeatable activities were available every 12 hours.
Systems Continuation
After the Systems Introduction quest, players could then choose to set their focus on any of the three systems they were taught about. In Herbology, players gathered seeds from around Portovenere by exploring a maze, looking through seaweed, and fighting Bowleaves. They could then harvest the seeds to grow plants and submit them at an Order Board in the middle of Portovenere for Order Points.
In Cooking, players gathered ingredients from the Pantry at the bottom of the restaurant and cooked items on the upper level. The baked foods could then be taken to the Order Board for Order Points.
In Crafting, players utilised the items they had made through cooking or herbology or gathered items through various challenges around Portovenere. They then made items, which were then taken to the Order Board for Order Points.
By the end of the event, there was an Order Board Competition. This competition focused on who could obtain the most Order Board points by completing orders for the Portovenere City Council. The winner received House points, and the top three players also received a temporary celebratory prefix.
Canvas Coordinator
A popular minigame was brought back, where players had to remember and click colours of the pride flag in a certain order to obtain Canvas Coins. After collecting 5,000 Canvas Coins, players could trade them for a Pride Paint Bucket, which served as a collectable beaded handbag.
Pride Flag Production
For the Pride festival, Gaia had many orders for flags and needed help gathering the materials to make more. Players could find up to 12 wool colours for flags around Portovenere in the form of heads and craft eight different flags for Pride Token rewards: LGBTQ+ Flag, MLM Flag, Lesbian Flag, Pansexual Flag, Bisexual Flag, Asexual Flag, Transgender Flag, Non-Binary Flag.
Minigames
