History
When the Ministry of Magicians was formed in the early 1700s, Eduard Clay concluded that the Ministry needed some sort of leading role to keep an eye on all of the work done in the Ministry.
As a result, Eduard stepped up to take this role upon himself. This caused chaos and disruption amongst the Ministry, as they disagreed on this matter. Eduard was forced to leave the Ministry, and the election for Minister was subsequently created. The election would be held every eight years, or when a minister resigned or found themselves otherwise incapable of continuing in the position.
1708 - 1715
Minister Gardner
Florentine Gardner was the first minister to be elected, taking on the role of minister at the age of 56. When people talk about Florentine, they describe him as a kind, caring man. With his grey hair that barely touched his shoulders and his calming green eyes, he stood at 6’1 tall. Due to his previous position as a professor at Hogsworth, where he taught Herbology, he had a positive reputation amongst the wizarding community and was therefore elected to be the first Minister of Magicians. A year before the new election was supposed to be held, Florentine retired from the position.
1715 - 1724
Minister Premont
After getting re-elected for a second term, Premont became ill and ended up leaving the Ministry to take care of his health.
1724 - 1740
Minister Avon
Avon was also re-elected for a second term, however, during the election in 1740, Avon had clearly become unpopular, as he barely received any votes.
1740 - 1743
Minister Verdin
Verdin could not handle the pressure of the position and disappeared, leaving not only the Ministry but the country without a trace.
1743 - 1761
Minister Londart
Two years after being re-elected for a third term as minister, Linden Londart passed away due to sudden heart failure.
1761 - 1764
Minister Londart
After an agreement within the Ministry, Alexander Londart took over after his father’s death. Since the death was sudden, there was barely any time for a new election. However, after three years, the Ministry decided to hold a new election, and Alexander was cast away from the position.
1764 - 1782
Minister Berke
After being re-elected for a third term, Berke started feeling the pressure of the position and decided to resign.
1782 - 1790
Minister Salem
Salem was elected to be the minister in 1782 but was pushed aside during the election in 1790.
1790 - 1792
Minister Wrythe
Wrythe was elected in 1790, back when he was still clueless about an unknown disease that he had contracted. This disease ended with Wrythe’s unexpected passing.
1792 - 1823
Minister Parken
Kiara Parken was the first female to be elected as minister. Additionally, she is still the longest-running minister in history, holding the position for an impressive 31 years. Before she was elected, Kiara was known as one of the best Auralocks in the Ministry. She was easily recognised by her long, raven-coloured hair, bright blue eyes and a birthmark on the left side of her nose.
1823 - 1823
Minister Hale
Not long after George Hale became minister, it became quite clear that not everyone agreed on this. A large group of witches and wizards started revolting, uniting together to take George down, resulting in his death.
1824 - 1840
After the death of George Hale there was clear chaos in the wizarding community. What exactly happened during this period of time is unknown, as all records have been erased.
1840 - 1845
Minister Elinar
In 1840, Madison Elinar managed to take back control over the Ministry, assuming the role of minister to bring back order. Madison was born in 1793 and grew up with Kiara as minister, whom she looked up to. Therefore, when she had regained control, she assigned the Ministry to delete any information about the period between 1824 and 1840 and worked hard to change everything back to how it was when Kiara was minister. However, after five years of hard work, it was clear that she was not popular amongst the community. Madison later decided to resign so that a new minister could be elected.
1845 - 1864
Minister Whitlock
When the election of 1845 happened, it was quite clear from the start that Whitlock would become the new minister. There had been some accusations of fraud during this period, however, the moment Whitlock became minister, everyone seemed to forget about them. After 19 years, Whitlock retired from the position.
1864 - 1878
Minister Sierra
Sierra stepped down after 13 years as a result of uproar in the Ministry. This uproar was caused by Sierra implementing rules that were not discussed or approved by the Ministry.
1878 - 1901
Minister Gardner
Clyde Gardner grew up hearing stories about his ancestor, Florentine Gardner. It became his dream to one day follow in his footsteps and become the Minister of Magicians. His dream came true in 1878 when he was 28 years old. After three terms as minister, he decided it was time to step down.
1901 - 1909
Minister Morgan
Morgan was elected to be the minister in 1901 but stepped down when the election of 1909 was underway.
1909 - 1923
Minister Laurier
Laurier was re-elected for a second term but stepped down in 1923 for reasons unknown.
1923 - 1923
Minister Tenderon
Theodor Tenderon only held the position of minister for two months and is therefore known as the minister who held the position the shortest. Theodor was threatened to step down and followed along to avoid complications.
1924 - 1940
Minister Favier
After being minister for two terms, Favier was voted out in the 1940 election.
1940 - 1949
Minister Amos
For some reason, Amos managed to get the Ministry to agree on delaying the election. He knew that he had become disliked and tried to stall so that he could keep the position longer. He managed to hold on to it for an extra year, which caused him to be hated even more. Amos fled the country during the election in 1949.
1949 - 1965
Minister Damen
Damen was minister for 2 terms until he was outvoted in the election of 1965.
1965 - 1986
Minister Ayesa
Ayesa was quite popular during the election of 1965 and managed to get re-elected for a third term. Due to unknown reasons, she stepped down in 1986.
1986 - 2002
Minister Lott
Lott was elected for a second term. However, during the election in 2002, he lost by just three votes.
Requirements
All potential candidates for the Minister of Magicians must have held at least one working position in any department of the Ministry of Magicians. They must also be a human-presenting individual (werewolves may run for office, for example, but not centaurs) and 17 years or older. While being a Hogsworth alumnus is not a requirement, there have been no Ministers thus far who have not graduated from the school.
Up to seven candidates may appear on the ballot every eight years. If the Minister at the time of the election is still alive and in service, one of those spots is reserved for them. The other spots are nominated by the public through petitions and campaigns to be approved by the Wizencouncil. Once the ballot is released to all registered magicians over the age of 17 in the British Isles, the candidate with the largest number of votes becomes the Minister.
Functions
The Minister of Magicians is the political leader of the Ministry. They are able to pass legislation with approval from the Wizencouncil and may act as a final judge during all magical trials. While the structure of the Ministry places the Minister of Magicians and the Wizencouncil as the highest governmental powers, the Chief Auralock has become the de facto lead executive in recent years, too.
The Minister is responsible for overseeing all of the department chairs of the Ministry. They are able to hire and remove senior members, as well as regulate their salaries. While it is the Wizencouncil’s job to codify laws, it is the Minister’s to execute them in good faith through communication with the Chief Auralock and management of leaders of other departments. No department may make any changes to any laws or write new ones without first proposing them to the Minister and the Wizencouncil.
