Overview

Dear Dr. Daphne is a weekly radio show that was created in 1982. It is episodic, with no connection between each episode. Each episode’s plot revolves around the titular character Dr. Daphne, who is an old woman at the start of the episode. She begins by reading a brief letter from a listener, who describes a worrisome situation that they were in. Dr. Daphne then narrates a flashback of a similar experience she had when she was a young teen. Each episode varies in plot, but they all have a basic medical-related issue that Dr. Daphne solves using simple, easy-to-understand solutions. There is also a cast of fun characters that help her out.

The show was created by Daphne Tonkin (1919 - Present) and Sylvie Cardinal. They wrote and produced the entirety of the original batch of episodes. However, since the mid-2000s, they have passed on most of the reins to others. As of now, Verna Mallard serves as the executive producer for the show.

History

Having two healers as parents meant that Daphne Tonkin never worried about her or her friends getting hurt. She could always rely on her mother or father, who both worked at Merlin's Magical Hospital and were prolific members of the medical community. They inspired in her a love for the fine art of medicine and would often teach her simple ways that she could use common household items and plants for healing purposes. By age 8, Daphne could make potions such as Begone-Sore-Throat Syrup with her eyes closed.

Growing up, Daphne impressed her peers by teaching them these simple recipes. From creature injuries to common sicknesses, Daphne seemed to have a cure or remedy for anything. She was shocked to find that what had been basic knowledge in her household was so unfamiliar to the vast majority of her classmates. Sure, they could go to the Hospital Wing at Hogsworth for help, but if that was not an option, she realised they’d have no idea what to do.

After studying Medical Magic at Hogsworth and flourishing, Daphne spent her final three years as an apprentice to Hogsworth’s healer. This furthered her love for medicine and inspired her to pursue a career in it when she was older. Helping her peers brought great joy to her life and she especially loved instilling in them the same interest in methods of healing.

After she graduated, she began studying Medical Magic full time with her parents’ assistance and began work at Merlin's Magical Hospital at age 26 as a general practitioner—where she began to thrive and proved to be a very knowledgeable doctor. Though she was skilled with spells, she preferred utilising potions and various tonics if possible.

When she was 32, she was interviewed by a Daily Diviner reporter named Sylvia Cardinal for a general article about medical practices at Merlin’s Magical Hospital. However, the two hit it off and quickly fell in love. They shared a deep desire for helping others and learning more about the world around them, and they married 8 months later.

Amazed by Daphne’s medical prowess and her ability to explain practises in simple terms, Sylvia came up with the idea for Daphne to have her own column in the Daily Diviner. Though Daphne was hesitant at first, she was encouraged by Sylvia and agreed to try it out. The column was named “Dear Dr. Daphne,” and she would respond to letters sent in by readers. Typically, they were medical-related inquiries, though from time-to-time she gave advice on other issues as well. Once she had settled into the position, Daphne found herself enjoying this new aspect of her life and continued it for 4 years.

After retiring at 61, Daphne felt she had more to give to the medical community and wizarding world. She recalled her younger days, particularly her peers who had been so ignorant on protecting and healing themselves. With the increase in popularity of radios, she and Sylvia came up with a radio show aimed at younger wizards. The idea was quickly picked up, and they soon found themselves airing their own weekly radio show, which they named “Dear Dr. Daphne” in remembrance of her column.

Daphne and Sylvia wrote the first 88 episodes, which were inspired by their childhoods and the struggles they faced, mainly revolving around injuries or simple ailments. Daphne then used her vast medical knowledge to choose easy-to-make healing potions for these such as the Anti-Inflammatory Tonic, Begone-Sore-Throat Syrup, Aspiritin Potion, and more. The show also included information about basic healing herbs such as sneezewort and yarrow. Daphne made sure to only use facts that children as young as 8 could understand, as she wanted them to be able to use the information in their own lives. Still, she always ended the episodes telling the listeners to get help from their parents or other medical professionals if needed.

Daphne and Sylvia co-produced Dear Dr. Daphne together until 2003. It was an easy decision to pass the torch to Verna Mallard, who had worked on the show almost since the beginning and shared their same passion for educating the youth. Today, the couple still have the final say in big decisions, but Verna takes care of everything else.
