Halloweentown 2018

Overview

The 2018 Halloween event went on from October 26th to November 4th. Players celebrated the holiday by travelling to Halloweentown and enjoying it with its residents. While there, they completed several quests by assisting the magicals and creatures living there, participating in exciting activities and contests, and obtaining exclusive cosmetics and collectables.

Storyline

Aggie has come to Hogsworth seeking help from a brave young wizard. Players must travel to Halloweentown, a realm separate from their own, where creatures and magicalfolk alike live together in peace and freedom. A great evil is threatening their world, and it is up to the witches and wizards at Hogsworth to stop it and save Halloween!

Location

To begin with, players were able to see the decorations for the Halloween event all over the Great Hall, which was decked out with orange and black banners and rugs and piled high with jack o’ lanterns. The Great Hall Courtyard on the other hand was scattered with wizard-sized candy corn and pumpkins. To the side, a group of witches and wizards sat around the campfire, telling scary stories beneath the overgrown tree that took up the centre of the courtyard. If players were lucky, they managed to make it past the gigantic spider and its web without being any more terrified than they already were by the life-like trick-or-treating costumes that the rest of Hogsworth’s students donned throughout the event.

Next, a majority of the special collectables were sold at stands in London, specifically in Diagonal Lane. The stands were decorated appropriately in orange and black, while the sellers hawked their goods, from scary clown decorations, to fireworks, to the spookiest tales of the season sent out by the Daily Diviner. 

However, the event storyline itself took place in Halloweentown. The houses there had roots in Bavarian architecture styles, but what made it obvious that this was no ordinary town was how the street was broken up by various spooky obstructions. Just behind the bus, there were gigantic jack o’ lanterns, and beyond that was a skeleton’s hand, springing from the ground, trying to claw itself out. 

Quests

A Town in Peril

After meeting Aggie in the Great Hall Courtyard, players were informed of a great evil that had been taking over the town. Aggie begged them to help, but in order to get in, players first had to get a mask from Madam Mym’s so that they would blend in among the creepy creatures in Halloweentown. Then, they got onto the Halloweentown bus at King’s Cross. Unfortunately, while on their journey, they are waylaid by powerful demented phantoms- something quite unusual compared to their normal behaviour according to the Chief Enforcer who greeted them once they made it to the town successfully. When they finally made it to Aggie’s house, she asked them to join her in her hunt for what is causing such strange behaviours, and once accepted, the quest ended.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

John heard cackles from his daughter's room in the night, and to his horror, upon investigating, he discovered that she had gone missing! Sympathetic players had to help him figure out who took his child and rescue her.

Ebb and Flow

Ellias was out fishing when he saw kids from the park walk straight over the edge of the riverbank and into the river! He tried to see where they had gone, but as soon as he took off his headphones to follow them, he blacked out. The player's job was to help him find the children and figure out what happened.

Into the Light

Inferai were found eating the corpses of the dead in the graveyard. Legend told of a mystical lantern hidden in a crypt that could stop them, so those who would end their feast had to find the crypt and release the light to destroy the Inferai.

Legendary Reads

The Librarian was having a problem with the Pixies in the area who were trying to ruin her business because she would not let them live in the attic of the Halloweentown library. It was the player's job to help her deal with the Pixies, and if they were successful, she offered some information about a potion that might save Halloweentown in return!

The Real Enemy

Aggie helped the player to discover that not only was there a curse poured into the water of Halloweentown, but that it would drive the non-human creatures of Halloweentown crazy and without a cure would kill them shortly after. The player had to help her to quickly brew the antidote and release it into the watermill to cure the town.

Side Quests

There were no side quests during this event.

Activities

The activities for this event included a House points competition, dropper, and maze. While the competition awarded its participants with House points, the other two activities rewarded theirs with Event Tokens.

House Points Competition

While out trick-or-treating, Halloweentown residents Drew, Johnny, and Sandy reaped heaps of candy from their efforts but were thwarted by a hole at the bottom of their bag that left their hard-earned treats scattered across the town. Players who put in the effort to track down the tantalising treats and form them back into candy baskets’ efforts were rewarded by the Headmaster through House points depending on how many in their House also pitched in. In the end, Honeybadger came in 1st, earning 500 House points, Serpent came in 2nd, earning 250 House points, Raven came in 3rd, earning 100 House points, and Griffin came in last, earning 50 House points.

Hellfire Dropper

The Hellfire Dropper was one of the torturous activities offered by Weliano, Halloweentown’s resident demon.

Demon’s Head Maze

The Demon’s Head Maze was the other gruesome game players completed for Weliano.

Contests

During the 2018 Halloween event, the Daily Diviner held a writing contest in which the top six spookiest entries were selected and given out to players to read in game at the Boo Seller NPC in Diagonal Lane. Not only could players enjoy the scary stories, but they could also go to the forums to vote on which three would win!

Rewards & Collectables

There were around 45 exclusive rewards and collectables to be obtained during the 2018 Halloween event, some of which cost Event Tokens and others of which cost Gold.
