History

Chocolatiering is an art that stems back decades. It was most commonly practised in Europe, though the origin of chocolate is from the Olmecs, located in present-day Mexico. Wizarding chocolatiers came to be not much later, though many assumed that they existed prior to Unmagical chocolatiers. Chocolatiering was first practised in Belgium, which is still known for its chocolate to this day.

While Unmagical and wizarding chocolatiers are very similar, the difference lies in the ingredients and effects. Wizarding chocolatiers often use their chocolate to heal people, whether it was from illnesses or minor injuries.

Wizarding chocolatiering was first practised by an Unmagical born wizard named Alexander de Groo and his parents. His parents were Unmagical chocolatiers who had established a shop in Belgium’s capital, Brussels. It had been quite a surprise when Alexander was given his official invitation to attend the nearest wizarding school, Beauxbois Academy of Magic.

Beauxbois has a varied curriculum and allows students to figure out their talents to the best of their abilities. It was not a surprise that Alexander excelled in Magical Cuisine and easily achieved the highest grades possible throughout the years. Upon graduating, Alexander had considered returning home to assist his parents in their store, despite both his parents begging him to chase his dreams. Ironically enough, Alexander had dreamed of becoming the greatest wizarding chocolatier of the decade.

He had saved up some money and moved to London at the age of 24. Alexander established a shop in Diagonal Lane called “L’art de la Belgique”. Alexander had become the first chocolatier to settle down in a busy place, such as London, which only benefited him in the long run. After the grand opening of his store in 1812, people rushed in every day and impatiently waited to get fresh batches of chocolate. Due to his shop being so busy, Alexander quickly hired three additional employees and taught them his secrets. Over time, Alexander would host regular chocolatiering lessons at his shop and became known as a master chocolatier.

Before his passing, Alexander had travelled to several countries and done classes with over 200 aspiring chocolatiers present. Many believed that following his classes would bless them with the same knowledge, allowing them to get as far as Alexander had within the chocolatiering community. What made Alexander’s chocolate so good was that each and every one of them had been infused with combinations of flavours, which he called ‘his secret recipe’. Alexander’s best seller had always been his 80% pure chocolate with banana filling. Upon taking a bite, it would cure anyone of any minor illnesses.

Though the biggest secret was that Alexander had always been a top-scoring student in both Magical Cuisine and Medical Magic. Not once had he revealed the healing magic put in his chocolates.

Notable Chocolatiers

Alexander de Groo

First ever recorded wizarding chocolatier. Notoriously known for his banana-filled chocolates that would cure minor illnesses. Passed away during a trip in Italy at the age of 62.

Evelyn Bell

One of Alexander’s first employees. She was granted access to Alexander’s recipe books and his secret healing magic. She took it upon herself to teach the wizarding community about the secrets Alexander would put within his chocolates. She took an additional course of Medical Magic in order to continue his legendary chocolates. She later passed Alexander’s store on to her great granddaughter.

Collin Fisher

The current owner of L’art de la Belgique, born and raised in Wallonia, Belgium. Upon travelling, Collin had stumbled across this shop and was highly interested. Took it upon himself to master the art of chocolatiering before even applying as an apprentice. Due to taking extra courses, Collin was quickly granted the title of master chocolatier and became the shop’s owner.

Education

When Alexander was the owner of the shop, employees were required to have an Exceeds Expectations or above on their Magical Cuisine studies. If not, he would advise them to take an additional course and provide proof before they were even allowed to apply for a job. When Evelyn became the shop’s owner and found out Alexander’s healing magic was hidden in his recipes, she set a higher standard and required everyone to have an Exceeds Expectations or above on Medical Magic.
