Overview

Committed in 2005, the Unknown Artefact Heist is one of the largest unsolved theft cases in the magical world. A trio of three wizards broke into the Ministry of Magicians late at night with the intent of stealing Merlin’s hat. Along with this prized possession, the three of them also escaped with other important artefacts.

History

In the summer of 2005, the Ministry of Magicians experienced the biggest theft to ever be recorded in its history. A group of three wizards had managed to break into the vault of artefacts kept inside the bowels of the building. Items from all over the world, ranging from both dangerous to iconic, were taken from the vault. However, the information that most rocked the Ministry was the knowledge that Merlin’s hat had been amongst the stolen artefacts.

A large investigation into the methods used to break into the vault, locating clues as to who the perpetrators were, and where the stolen pieces of history were located was launched immediately. For a while, no one was able to find any answers to any of the aforementioned questions. Investigators worked tirelessly, struggling to come up with any sort of explanation as to what happened on the night of the heist. Eventually, after nearly a year of work, one investigator seemed to have had a breakthrough in the case.

Cecilia Clemmons, a 42-year-old investigator who was assigned to the case almost immediately, had been inspecting the walls of the vault on a hunch that the room wasn’t as secure as the Ministry claimed it was. After many tests and observations, she announced that she figured out how the criminals managed to get into the vault. Along the door that opened into the room housing the artefacts, there were points that were not entirely sealed, allowing for magic to make its way through. Her hypothesis stated that she believed the criminals to have used a spell they created themselves to be able to manipulate this hole in the defence system, allowing them entry into the vault.

Upon the press gaining news of this new break in the case, newspapers began flying onto the shelves, announcing the news and portraying Cecilia as a genius. Exactly 24 hours after the newspapers began headlining this information, the Minister of Magicians would find a letter addressed to him on his desk. With no one knowing how this letter ended up in his office, Minister Brooks put the entire ministry on lockdown. The contents of the letter were not threatening, but rather congratulatory, with the perpetrators giving them their regards on figuring out how they managed to get into the artefact vault. Other details—such as there being three of them, what they took, and making it clear that these artefacts would never be recovered—were also included in the letter. To this day, the Unknown Artefact Heist still remains a cold case, with no new leads or information having appeared since the singular breakthrough by Cecilia Clemmons.
