Overview
Located on the western side of Potterworld’s map, Riddleyard is a town rich with history. It is a rather small village, but its notability in the Riddle and Grim families means that people from all around Britain have heard of the village. After all, the Grims were the final remaining descendants of the renowned Sevran Serpent.
The Riddles were an Unmagical family who purchased the majority of the small town we now call Riddleyard. They established themselves in the town several hundred years ago, and built their large Manor which lies towering over the rest of the village. Despite the family’s wealth, they have run into multiple misfortunes throughout their lives. In 1904, the townspeople of Riddleyard were tired of being at a financial disadvantage compared to the Riddles. Therefore, the townspeople formed a large crowd armed with the most weapon-like household item they could find, and went to attack the manor. They rushed into the building and were met with tight security from the Riddles, who had heard of a possible attack previously and had made sure to hire extra security. The fighting calmed quickly, but the townspeople were burdened with three casualties.
The other notable family from near Riddleyard is the Grim family. However, their notability is about the only thing the Riddles and Grims have in common. The Grims were a magical, true-blood family. They once had large wealth and fame, but their reckless spending reduced their family riches to nothing but an old and crumbling shack. The Grim family had an extreme disdain towards all things Unmagical, especially the Riddle family, as the Riddle family reminded the Grims of the riches the Grims once had.
Despite the history of the families separately, Riddleyard is famously known for the event that brought the two families together in holy matrimony. Despite the Grim family's hatred towards the Riddles, Mariam Grim fell hopelessly in love with the Unmagical Tom Riddle Snr. Oppositely, Tom Riddle was open about his dislike for Mariam, as he (and the majority of the Riddleyard town) believed that the Grim family were insane and cruel. However, overnight, Tom Riddle suddenly appeared to be equally as in love with Mariam as she was to him. Quickly the two married and started a family, naming their son Tommy Riddle.
Once they had established a family together, Mariam believed that Tom Riddle Snr. loved her completely and truly, and thus Mariam removed a curse she had placed on Tom Riddle. After that curse was removed, it was revealed that he did not love her, as he quickly abandoned her to run back to the Riddle family. He told his family everything that had happened, and when he went back to confront Mariam, he could no longer find her or his son. It is unknown to what ever did happen to Mariam but it is assumed by the townspeople of Riddleyard that she was killed by either the Riddles or her fellow Grims. Tommy Riddle was sent to an orphanage in London to grow up, and returned to Riddleyard later on in his life to murder his Riddle family.
The murder of the Riddle family by Tommy Riddle became the talk of the magical world. Tommy Riddle had initially travelled to Riddleyard to find out about his heritage from uncle Martin Grim. When he learned of the tragedy to his mother, he stole Martin’s wand and removed his memories. He then travelled to the Riddle Manor and murdered his father, grandfather, and grandmother using the Killing Curse. Authorities tracked the murders to Martin Gaunt due to the spells being cast with his wand, and Martin was imprisoned for life in The Dark Prison.
Geography & Environment
Riddleyard is perched on the side of a hill, with Riddle Manor looking down over the rest of the town. The town has cool winters and mild summers, but nothing extreme, and never meets the colds of the nearby Wigtown.
Notable Locations
Riddleyard Graveyard
The most notable location in Riddleyard is actually just outside of the town itself. Once upon a time, the Riddleyard Graveyard hosted a famous battle between Lord Valdemar and Henry Porter. Just prior to this battle, the poor Caleb Diggen was murdered. The graveyard is well known and well feared, with many Riddleyard residents vowing to never go near the place where Valdemar returned.
