Overview
Appleby’s Butterbrew Festival 2023 was held between 20th August and 21st September, 2023. Unlike previous butterbrew events, this year players ventured away from the streets of Hogsend to celebrate. This festival was released synchronously with the rebuild of Appleby Village and allowed players to take part in an introduction quest, themed escape rooms, a brewing competition, and a variety of activities and carnival games.
Storyline
There was no particular storyline for this event. Instead, Hogsworth students were invited to take part in butterbrew-themed minigames, as well as local traditions with the villagers.
Location
The festival was held in the newly revamped version of Appleby Village. The town played host to many butterbrew stalls and decorations for the duration of the event and could be accessed via the Kevin NPC outside of Hogsworth’s Great Hall. Alternatively, players could use their Warp Key to travel to the event once they had completed the introduction quest.
Quests
Butterbrew 2023 Festival
Joyce Appleby had been trying to get Appleby to host the Butterbrew Festival for years, ever since she became mayor of the little village. However, since its origins, the Butterbrew Festival has always been held in Hogsend. After nearly a decade of nagging the Ministry for this to be changed, they finally accepted. Players started this quest with Festival Kevin at the Great Hall, where they then travelled to the festival and were met with a new Appleby! Players were able to meet the residents of Appleby and discover all that was available at this new event.
The Butterbrew Trials
As in previous years, players could be teleported to the Broomsticks Inn cellars to partake in the annual Butterbrew Trials. Heidi challenged players to put their thinking skills to the test in a Butterbrew-themed escape room, revolving around solving 10 puzzles between the Entrance Room, the Break Room, the Butterbrew Lab Room, the Treasury, and the Clock Room. These puzzles included finding hidden items, mathematics, decoding secret codes, and more. Completing puzzles would reward the player with coloured gems. The five different gems had to be placed in the correct order inside the Clock Room in order to claim the final prize, which was the annual Butterbrew Trials Trophy.
The Appleby Butterbrew Challenge
During the Appleby Butterbrew Challenge, players worked with the Appleby Arrows youth quabbleball team to complete a series of eight challenging tasks around the village. Through the series of puzzles, players learned the correct recipe for Appleby’s Specialty Butterbrew. As a result, half of the challenges were themed around the local community and the other half around butterbrew. Upon completion of all eight challenges, players were rewarded with the Fetching Falcon collectable.
Side Quests
There were no side quests in the event.
Activities
There were several activities available at this event, ranging from carnival games to working with the local bird trainer. Each carnival minigame required a ticket to play, and there was a wide range of rewards available.
Balloon Darts
Returning from the previous year’s Butterbrew Carnival, this game stall had the classic balloon dart game for players to enjoy. Each balloon popped had a chance of dropping bonus Event Tokens or Balloon Darts Game Tickets. These tickets were then redeemed for some cool animal-themed plushies.
Food Eating Competition
Located in the town centre, this upgraded returning activity involved eating as much food as possible from the table in the correct order within 30 seconds. Players were able to select from Sweet, Savoury, Drinks, and Fruits & Vegetables for each round, with the different food groups providing a different level of difficulty to the game. If the wrong food was consumed, tickets were lost. Upon completion, players were rewarded with Event Tokens and Food Eating Game Tickets, which were used to buy heads of local delicacies and other butterbrew-themed heads.
Birds of a Feather
During this activity with the local bird trainer, players were tasked with training their bird up to compete in the Bird Talent Show. During the activity, players focused on their bird’s beauty, training and agility to earn a high score and gain a variable reward of Event Tokens.
Plushie Farm
Similarly to other members of the Butterbrew Carnival in Hogsend, Ella returned with her activity: Plushie Farm. Players had to search the entirety of Appleby to find barrels of various materials. Once collected, the materials could be used to complete plushie collections for Ella and earn Event Tokens.
Butterbrew Bazaar
This activity required players to work together inside of the Appleby Inn to brew different flavours of Butterbrew and serve as many customers as possible within five minutes. The flavours included orange, grape and apple and serving more customers enabled the participating players to earn a higher tier of rewards, and resultantly a higher amount of Event Tokens.
Buttership
This player-favourite activity brought the popular board game “Battleships” into Potterworld. Players played the game against Willow and had to carefully place their butterbrew on a grid before attempting to destroy all of Willow’s butterbrew before she destroyed theirs. Successful completion of the activity rewarded players with Event Tokens and Buttership Tickets, which could be spent on a series of coloured treasure chests.
Minigames
Throughout the event, players could talk to the Minigames Master to play some minigames and earn Event Tokens.

Daily Taskboard
The task board in the festival’s marketplace shared eight daily activities for players to earn a small amount of Event Tokens and a small amount of experience.

Contests
Barrel Racing Tournament
As part of the festival, the Developer team introduced a new minigame called Barrel Racing. To celebrate its release, a Barrel Racing tournament] was hosted in partnership with the Arena team. By entering the tournament, players had a chance to win an impressive 10,000 Gold, 500 Potterpoints, a temporary Champion prefix, and more. This tournament spanned just under 2 weeks, and the results were announced on September 13, 2023.
2023 Butterbrew Giveaway
Between 28th August and 28th September, 2023 the WizNetworker team hosted the 2023 Butterbrew Giveaway to celebrate the event. For a chance to win a store cosmetic, 200 House points, and 100 Potter Points, players had to submit a photo from the “Birds of a Feather” side quest, featuring their best-dressed bird.
